Game 83: Royals at Tigers

Bruce Chen (0-2, 4.38) vs. Justin Verlander (8-4, 3.54), 7:05 p.m. EST

Usually, we like to devote a paragraph to each starting pitcher in these game previews, to give you an idea of what might be expected in the game to come. But I think I'm keeping it short and sweet tonight. Because if the Detroit Tigers cannot win a game in which Justin Verlander starts against Bruce Chen... well, then the All-Star break can't come soon enough.

Although maybe we shouldn't presume anything, as both Verlander and Chen are winless in their last two starts. And neither pitcher has received very much run support, with the Tigers scoring five runs in those two games, and the Royals scoring three. Verlander gave up seven runs in his 11.1 innings, while Chen allowed six in 12.1. So clearly, Chen is on more of a roll.
