Scott Baker (9-7, 4.59) vs.
Jarrod Washburn (8-7, 2.93), 1:05 p.m. EST
After the Twins evened up this weekend's series with an 11-0 romp last night, the Tigers go for the series win on what's supposed to be a hot afternoon in Detroit.
Jarrod Washburn gets a second chance to make a good first impression on Tigers fans, making his second start since coming over in a trade from the Seattle Mariners. His debut in the Old English D didn't go so well, as he allowed six runs on six hits (two of them home runs) in less than six innings vs. the Orioles. Washburn has faced the Twins twice this season while with the Mariners, allowing just one run over 14 innings.
For the Twins, Scott Baker hasn't taken a loss in his past five starts. And in the last four of those games, he's only allowed four total runs. Baker faced the Tigers once earlier this season, however, giving up five runs and seven hits in six innings. In 13 career starts versus Detroit, he's 4-3 with a 3.97 ERA.
Marcus Thames gets the start at DH today, as he's 5-for-16 against Baker with three home runs. As was the case with Carl Pavano, right-handers have hit better against Baker this season, totaling an .800 OPS. (via Jason Beck)
