Tigers say Victor Martinez mostly a DH

Confirming speculation, the Tigers announced today their signing of free agent Victor Martinez is official and clarified that he will catch "2-3" games a week and otherwise hit as the DH or spell Miguel Cabrera at first base.

Dombrowski told MLive.com's Steve Kornacki:

"We expect Victor to be in our lineup on a daily basis, serving primarily as our club’s designated hitter and catching two to three times a week. He also has the ability to fill in at first base and his versatility allows us to keep a premier bat in our lineup every day. We’ve discussed this role with Victor and both sides are very pleased with what he brings to the Tigers organization."

Over the course of the season, that should work out to about 60-70 games at catcher for Martinez, and 90-100 for Alex Avila.

Dombrowski also stated Martinez is the kind of middle-of-the-lineup run-producer the team needed.
