Happy Opening Day! Merry Baseball Is Back!
Tigers outfielder Austin Jackson and second baseman Scott Sizemore are both written into today's lineup for their major league debts, so it's a pretty exciting time for them as well as fans glimpsing the future of the team.
Well, other than the fact the game features a pair of the American League's top pitchers and their first official plate appearances will be against Zack Greinke. (Interesting fact: Greinke has never started on opening day in his career). So they've got their work cut out for them.
So do the Royals of course, with Justin Verlander getting the nod for Detroit. This could make for a pretty quick game, especially when you consider the offenses the teams are putting on the field against the stud pitchers.
Johnny Damon will be making his Detroit debut as well. And if fortune is on Detroit's side, closer Jose Valverde will get his first official inning as a Tiger in the ninth inning.
Meaningless extra info: The last Tigers opening day victory came in 2006. That was also the last time they opened the season in Kansas City.
