The Tigers are 3-1 on the current 6 game homestand, not bad at all considering they were coming off a 11 game west coast road trip, haven't had a day off since April 15, and won't have another till this coming Thursday. Keep in mind Thursday is the Tigers' only day off till the last week of May. Absolutely silly, I know.
The MLB schedulers have done the Tigers no favors. It's to their credit they have a winning record.
Items of note from the various game previews:
Magglio Ordonez left the Friday's win with what the club calls cramping of his abdominal muscles. He's listed as day-today after undergoing tests late last night.
There's a new law taking effect in in Michigan today. Bars, restaurants and other public work areas are now smoke-free. You can add Comerica Park to the list. How will noted smoking evangelist Jim Leyland function without his beloved Marlboro Reds? Via Jason Beck, Leyland had the following to say...
"I'm a law-abiding citizen. That's just the way it is," Leyland said after Friday's game. "We're not supposed to smoke here, and I won't do it. I'll try to find someplace outside somewhere, I guess, but I think you're not supposed to smoke at all in the park."
He complained a little about Comerica's cigar bar...
"It's kind of freaky, because we have a cigar bar up there [on the suite level in the park], and it's legal to smoke cigars up there, but you can't have a cigarette in the cigar bar. I'm not into making the laws and everything. I'm into abiding by them. I'll just have to do what I can and I'll be fine."
But he was going to get a few final smokes in...
"I've got till 6 a.m.," Leyland said Friday night. "That could be two cartons."
Will we see the lack of cigarettes screw up his judgment? Will Fox Sports Detroit cameras cut to the bench and catch Leyland going through nicotine withdrawal? We shall see.
The status of Carlos Guillen has not changed. He's eligible to come off the DL next weekend, but...you know what's coming...it's still uncertain if Glass Joe Guillen will be healthy enough to return. And so it goes...
Johnny Damon's 4th inning double against the Angels was the Tigers' 66th of season, leading the AL. It's the highest total by the Tigers in the month of April since 1952, the earliest such records are available. It's also the most April doubles by any AL team since 2003, when the Blue Jays pounded 78. Making this all the more impressive is the Tigers were LAST in doubles in 2009.
How crazy good is Austin Jackson's start to the season? He's 36-99 at the plate. No player in Tigers history has had take many hits in his first 100 at bats at the MLB level. Nothing Jackson does surprises me at this point. He's been that damn good.
