Coming off a 20 games in 20 days stretch, and it being another 2+ weeks before they get another off day, Mother Nature would have been doing the tired Tigers a solid if the storms had hit a couple of hours earlier. But the monsoon-like weather thundering its way through the upper Midwest didn't hit the Mistake on the Lake till the game was 4 innings old and the Tigers were trying to give away a what had been a 7-1 lead.
Thanks to the postponement, last night never happened. The game will be replayed, but no date has been set. We do know for sure it won't be this weekend. The Tigers won't be back in Cleveland till after the All-Star break when a 3 game series is scheduled for July 16-18.
So let's start the series all over again, shall we?
This afternoon we have a battle of the Justins.
The Justin Verlander we saw in his last start was dominant. It being May, it means the always slow starting Verlander is right on schedule. His ERA for April was 5.53. In May, 1.11.
The pitcher Verlander's facing, Justin Masterson, is the lesser of two Justins. The opposition is batting .333 (14 for 42) the first time through the lineup against Masterson, who has lost nine straight decisions since beating the Angels on Aug. 20.
Notes of interest in from the various game previews:
With last night's game bring washed out, the Tigers' nine game winning streak against the Tribe is still intact. The Tigers are a nifty 17-4 against the Indians since the start of '09.
Who says youth is wasted on the young? Austin Jackson, Alex Avila, Brennan Boesch and Scott Sizemore have combined to hit .302, with 29 extra base hits and 26 RBI. The rookies have contributed 29.4% of the Tigers total hits (83 of 282). As a team, the tigers are hitting .280, leading the AL.
Boesch has 9 RBI in his last 10 games.
Miguel Cabrera is leading the AL in hitting (.372) and RBI (30)., while in the top 10 in home runs (7). Time to start Triple Crown talk yet?
Carlos Guillen has swung a bat for the first time since his hamstring sent him to his home away from home, the DL. Reports say Guillen said "it felt fine." Well, OK then.
Things are not good in Cleveland at the moment. The fans and media are already losing patience with their baseball team. Earlier this week, post game host Bruce Drennan went off on the Tribe in a 5 minute long rant after another loss. It's good for several giggles.
