2011 Detroit Tigers Prospects: #28, John Murrian, C

Every weekday from February 7-25, I'll be publishing a prospect profile from my top 30 Detroit Tigers prospect list. The profiles that appear here on Bless You Boys were the ones that were cut for space from this year's Maple Street Press Tigers Annual. You'll be able to read half the list for free, but I'd really encourage you to order the annual for the other half (not to mention all the other great content).

John Murrian, C, Grade C

Bats R, Throws R, Height 6'1", Weight 210 lbs, Date of Birth June 15, 1988

Murrian put up a line of .264/.343/.384 in High A Lakeland this year. That certainly isn't incredible, but it's okay for a catcher. He doesn't have a lot of power, and he tends to pull the ball when swinging for the fences, but the walk rate is nice at 10.1%. Behind the plate, Murrian has a good arm and his defense projects as average to slightly above, though he needs polish. Murrian could probably make a good backup catcher, and given the players Detroit considers passable behind the dish, he might even be a starter there. ETA midseason 2012 or spring training 2013.
