FYI: Where's the long-missing BYB editor? Here's the scoop

Note from Big Al: Kurt asked me to update everyone as to where I've been, your missing BYB editor.

I'm damn exhausted. All the damn time.

\Which is why I haven't been around these parts, even though the original plan was to return to BYB after the end of the football season. Kurt even tweeted as much just as the Super Bowl ended. Well, you know what they say about best laid plans, and all that...

It was just my luck to be diagnosed with a severe iron deficiency.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a phone call from my rheumatologist (for those of you who don't know my background, I'm hobbled by both osteoarthritis and severe ankylosing spondylitis) letting me know my latest blood test showed my iron levels were disturbingly low. As in scary low. As in lower than Gerald Laird's batting average. A normal iron level for your typical male is 14. Mine is a hair over 7. Anemia is not cool. But it did explain why I've been literally dragging ass since the end of the NFL season, and not feeling like doing much of anything, let alone write.

So off to U of M and the gastroenterologist I went. When the GI is casually talking to you, then looks at your blood work report and says, "Whoa," you get kinda concerned. Long story short, he believes my ankylosing spondylitis, which likes to attack soft tissue along with the spine, may have something to do with my body not being able to keep me swimming in iron. We'll soon find out...

What's my current status? I'm on new, much stronger, stomach meds meant to keep my arthritis meds from chewing up my insides into so much hamburger (which is another possibility as to why my iron is lower than Justin Verlander's spring ERA), scheduled to have iron directly infused via IV once a week for the next 6 weeks in hopes of getting me to a point where I have more color in my face than Dracula, and have a colonoscopy and endoscopy (going in both ends to investigate, so to speak) scheduled for next month if the iron levels don't come back to, and remain at, an acceptable level.

So that's what's what. I'm not at all happy with the current state of my health, but I'm dealing with it. There's things I want to try on the site this year that should be fun for the BYB community, but they're on the back burner for the time being. I miss writing here, and I plan on coming back when my stamina allows. I'm hoping that will be by the start of the season, knock on wood. Trust me, after writing about the Lions every freaking day for seven months, I'm ready to cover Tigers baseball.

The problem right now is I do a few things around the house, then I'm overcome with a wave of feeling just plain whipped, too tired to do much more than watch TV. So writing will take a back seat to getting healthy for the time being. (I think a need a nap after posting this!) I'm going to try and ease myself into my duties here at BYB, but there's no timetable. Kudos to Kurt and the other editors for giving me the time to recover.

I appreciate your patience, and thanks for reading!
