The highlights of the game arguably came in the sixth inning, when Miguel Cabrera appeared to miss slightly on a pitch from Astros reliever Jose Valdez but sent a towering popup somewhere past the center field wall for a solo home run. The next pitch offered by Valdez came inside to Victor Martinez, who took exception. Mutual barking ensued. A few pitches later, Martinez doubled to the center field wall, settling the dispute. The Tigers led by five runs at the end of the inning and finished the day with the 8-4 victory over Houston. It was their 20th win of the Grapefruit League season.
Meanwhile, Tigers starter Brad Penny was a bit too efficient, going six innings in just 82 pitches if I remember correctly. He had to get the rest of his work in, in the bullpen. Line for the game: seven hits, four strikeouts, two earned runs. Next stop: Game 2 vs. the Yankees on Saturday.
Cabrera finished the day with three hits and four RBI. WIll Rhymes had two hits and a walk. Magglio Ordonez and Martinez had two hits, a double apiece. Austin Jackson walked twice.
