UPDATED: Tigers purchase contract of Omir Santos. Will the next move be Victor Martinez to the DL?

UPDATE 6:30 PM: It's official. Martinez, along with his groin and accordion, have been placed on the 15 day disabled list.

Victor Martinez has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin.

Wonderful.

Original post: Is gimpy groined Victor Martinez DL bound? The latest reports out of Seattle make it appear that way.

Via the Tigers' Official Twitter:

Tweet 1: Prior to tonight's game, the Tigers will purchase the contract of catcher Omir Santos from Triple A Toledo.

Tweet 2: A corresponding move will be announced prior to tonight's game.

So who is leaving the roster to make room for Santos? If the Tigers get results they are apparently expecting to receive in regard to Martinez's groin injury, Victor and his accordion will have 15 days of making music together. We'll find out for sure later tonight, but I wouldn't bet against it.

As for Santos, the Tigers signed him as insurance at the catching position last December. Here what Jason Beck had to say at the time:

Santos is best known for a good stint of playing time behind the plate for the Mets in 2009. He batted .260 in 96 games that season with 14 doubles, seven home runs and 40 RBIs. He played just 27 games this past season between Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A Binghamton, batting a combined .160 with a home run and 10 RBIs in 94 at-bats.

This season with the Mud Hens, while splitting time with John Murrian, the 29 year old Santos is hitting .429 in in 14 at bats.
