Charlotte put up a four-spot on Andy Oliver early on, but he recovered and pitched six innings, only giving up those four runs on three walks and five strikeouts. Scott Thorman was 1-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a double (the only Hens extra base hit in the game).
Not at all kidding about the 16 innings. It's a good thing LJ Gagnier went seven innings, or the bullpen would have exploded. Of course, Gagnier also gave up five runs (four earned) on eight strikeouts, a walk and a homer. Special mention should go to Chance Ruffin, who struck out five in two innings.Francisco Martinez was 4-7 with a walk and a double.
Trevor Feeney gave up two earned runs in 6.1 innings, striking out 6 and walking one. Avisail Garcia was 2-3 with a double, a triple and a walk. Gustavo Nunez also tripled.
This game is kinda weird. Instead of being the first game in a doubleheader, the Whitecaps faced off with Bowling Green in a replay of a game two nights ago that was successfully contested (details here). The game was 4-3 West Michigan in the bottom of the fifth, and Bowling Green had the bases loaded with one out. A player hit a ball into right-center field where it was caught for the second out. The left fielder caught the ball on a dive, however, and all three baserunners crossed the plate. But the guy on first never tagged up, so the umpires ruled him out- without crediting the two legitimate runs that crossed the plate for Bowling Green. So the game score was reset to 5-4 Bowling Green, and the score didn't change from there. Fun stuff.
This game also ended up 5-4. Josue Carreno gave up four earned runs in 5.1 innings, striking out seven and walking one, while giving up a homer. Rob Brantly was 2-4 with a double and Nick Castellanos was 1-3 with a double.
Duane Below gave up four earned runs in six innings, walking four and striking out six while allowing a homer. Ben Guez was 2-4 with a homer and Scott Thorman was 1-4 with a homer.
AA: Erie vs. Trenton postponed (rain)
Victor Larez gave up three earned runs in five innings, striking out three and walking one. Gustavo Nunez was 2-5 while Avisail Garcia and Corey Jones were both 2-4.
Antonio Cruz struck out three and walked four in six innings, giving up four runs (three earned). Nick Castellanos was 1-4 with a double.
