Minor League Weekend Recap: Jay Voss pitches well for Erie, Drew Smyly gets shelled in Lakeland

Sunday, July 3

AAA: Toledo 7, Indianapolis 1

Fu Ti Ni struck out three and walked three in a scoreless 4.1 inning start (the bullpen handled this game in lieu of a starter). Ryan Strieby homered.

AA: Erie 6, Akron 2

Jay Voss struck out eight batters over seven innings, allowing two earned runs. Justin Henry tripled and Jamie Johnson was 1-3 with two walks.

A+: Clearwater 11, Lakeland 3

Drew Smyly gave up seven earned runs in three innings. Tony Plagman doubled and William Bergolla chipped in two hits.

A: Fort Wayne 2, West Michigan 1

Kyle Ryan struck out four and gave up an earned run in six innings. Nick Castellanos doubled in the Whitecaps' only run.

SS: Connecticut 3, Lowell 2

Luis Angel Sanz allowed an earned run in five innings, striking out five. Javier Azcona had two hits, including a triple and a homer.

Saturday, July 2

AAA: Indianapolis 4, Toledo 3 (12 innings)

Toledo lost a squeaker here, as starter Thad Weber gave up three earned runs in six innings, striking out seven. Daniel Schlereth had three strikeouts in two perfect innings. Cale Iorg had two hits, one of which was a home run.

AA: Akron 7, Erie 6

Casey Crosby walked six in three innings of work. He allowed four earned runs. Bryan Pounds was 3-3 with a home run.

A+: Lakeland 8, Clearwater 4

Jared Wesson gave up an earned run in five innings, and Jordan Lennarton hit a home run. Daniel Fields hit a pair of singles and was caught stealing.

A: West Michigan 4, Fort Wayne 2

Kevin Eichhorn struck out three in 6.1 innings of work, allowing an earned run. Nick Castellanos doubled (again).

SS: Lowell 16, Connecticut 8

Tyler Barret allowed seven earned runs in 1.2 innings. Patrick Leyland was 2-3 with a double.

Friday, July 1

AAA: Toledo 3, Columbus 1

Duane Below struck out three in seven scoreless innings. Scott Thorman had a stolen base and three hits, including a double.

AA: Erie 11, Akron 9

Brooks Brown gave up eight runs in 4.2 innings, but only three were earned. Brandon Douglas was 3-5 with a double, Rawley Bishop was 3-5 with a double and Fransisco Martinez chipped in a pair of hits.

A+: Dunedin 6, Lakeland 0

Cole Nelson gave up five runs (four earned) in two-thirds of an inning. Silver lining: both those outs were strikeouts. Wade Gaynor doubled.

A: West Michigan 16, Fort Wayne 11

Brian Flynn gave up four earned runs in four innings. The bullpen promptly exploded. Luckily the offense was hot. Four players doubled: Nick Castellanos, Jamie Robbins, Luis Castillo and Ryan Hamme.

SS: Connecticut 6, Vermont 5

Matt Crouse struck out four over 5.1 scoreless innings. Dean Green was 2-3 with a double.
