There's always a lot of talk about the Tigers being unable to take advantage of runners in scoring position. Just a couple days ago, we saw them totally whiff when one more run inside 14 innings would have resulted in a win.
But I think every team's fans feel like their team doesn't hit well with runners in scoring position. So I went to a handy-dandy stats site and checked it out. What I found might surprise you if you haven't been paying close attention -- or will come as no surprise if you have seen a few of the links we've pointed to this season.
The Tigers actually do pretty well with a runner on second or third base. They rank fifth in OPS, behind the Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox and Indians. They are third in on-base percentage (.351), third in average (.272) but sixth in slugging (.404).
So, you know, it's not that bad. It just feels like it some times.
