Delmon Young acquired by Detroit Tigers; Will Rhymes optioned to Toledo

This news is just breaking. We'll have updates as we can. But the Tigers announced on Twitter moments ago:

Tigers acquire OF Delmon Young from Twins for Minor Leaguer Cole Nelson and PTBNL.

The Tigers will announce a corresponding move later.

Young -- Dmitri's brother of course -- is arbitration eligible after this season.

Young (Fangraphs stats) is currently in the midst of his worst season in the majors, hitting a line of .266 average, .305 on-base percentage and .357 slugging average. Although Young's overall numbers are poor this season, he appears to have turned the corner a bit. From June 1 through now, he's hitting .301 with a .345 on-base percentage and .423 slugging.

Opinions vary on his defense, with UZR viewing him as being above-average this season in left field. The fans also rated his arm strength as above average last season.

My gut reaction is to like this deal.

Since today was OBI day at BYB, I thought I'd check how he compared in percentage to current Tigers.

Young's numbers in Minnesota:

4.4% from first base
17.5% from second base
41.9% from third base

Those numbers in Detroit would have ranked him third in getting the runner home from second (between Miguel Cabrera and Wilson Betemit) and fifth in getting the runner home from third (between Cabrera and Brennan Boesch).

UPDATE: Tigers announced Will Rhymes was optioned to Toledo.
