Brad Eldred designated as Delmon Young returns to Tigers

To make room for Delmon Young's reinstatement with the Tigers, a move had to be made. Few could be surprised by the Tigers' choice: Brad Eldred. He was designated for assignment today. If he clears waivers, he'll return to Triple-A Toledo, where he had more extra-base hits than games played to start the season.

Since making his season debut April 27, the tall 31-year-old hasn't batted quite so well. He had two hits, including a triple, in his first game. He went just 1-for-11 since then, crashing his average to .188 in 16 at bats.

If he doesn't make it back to Detroit, he will best be remembered for being the tall, big guy Jim Leyland called to pinch run for Andy Dirks on May 1.

Young, you'll recall, served a seven-day suspension for alleged actions that occurred early last Friday morning in New York. Young will not start tonight, Leyland said earlier in the week. He may be available to pinch hit.
