Pitching Matchup: Justin Verlander (2-1, 2.38 ERA) vs. Kevin Millwood (0-3, 5.34 ERA)

Kevin Millwood will pitch for the Mariners until one of their vaunted trio of SP prospects is deemed ready. In the meantime, he will eat a lot of innings in a mediocre fashion with numbers artificially inflated by Safeco Field. The Mariners will then trade Kevin Millwood to whatever poor chump needs rotation help to fight for a playoff spot. Anyways, just like Beavan has a schtick, which is quality starts, Millwood has a schtick. He pitches six or seven innings using stuff with good movement placed dangerously high in the zone. Exactly one of those innings is awful, and no one knows which it will be.

I'd be happy with a big number in the top of the first, then letting Verlander coast from there.

How spoiled have we become as Tigers fans? Verlander pitched 8 innings and gave up just two runs in his last start, yet we still think he looked "off." Instead of citing more ridiculous stats about Verlander (hint: they're good), I decided that it would be more appropriate to tell you that the closest Taco Bell is less than a mile away from SAFECO Field. Good to know that Justin won't be getting winded looking for his pregame meal.

Outlook

For a team that already plays in a gigantic stadium, facing Justin Verlander must feel like the game is being played in Yosemite National Park. While there may be more room for bloops to drop (especially if Delmon Young makes it back into left field), there's no way that Verlander gives up a homer here. Millwood, on the other hand, is a different story. He has given up 12 home runs in just 87 2/3 career innings at SAFECO.
