Every column is an interesting process. I start to have an idea what I'll write about about two weeks ahead of time. Then it changes. This week I went through about three ideas, including a bit of perspective on Quintin Berry or a closer look at the Tigers' defense. But neither story being an accurate picture of the moment, I went with the Victor Martinez angle. The column's point is two-fold: One, that if they get him back as early as some around the organization have spoken about, it will be a big boost not too far from the trade deadline. And two, just how much he's been missed in that 5-spot. Even if healthy, he shouldn't be expected to have the kind of season he did in 2011. Yet whatever he could provide would be a lot better than what Detroit has received from its 5-hole batters and designated hitters. (Read: Delmon Young).
