Rosters were announced for MLB's 2012 All-Star Game on TBS this afternoon. 3 Detroit Tigers will be in attendance, Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander, otherwise known as the usual suspects. Despite having a breakout season, Auistin Jackson was not named to the team or to the fan's Final Vote ballot.
The 2012 MLB All-Star Game will be held Tuesday, July 10th in Kansas City.
Fielder will start at 1st base for the AL, thanks to winning the fan vote. Fielder, hitting .371/.485/.856 with a .294 BA, 12 HR and 52 RBI, will be playing in his fourth All-Star Game.
Other Tigers 1st basemen who have started an All-Star game are Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg (1939-40), Rudy York (1941-42), Norm Cash (1961 and 1971), Cecil Fielder (1991) and Cabrera (2010).
Verlander will make his 5th appearance in the midsummer classic. The Tigers' number one starter is 8-5 with a 2.69 ERA, leading the AL in strikeouts with 121.
Cabrera made the team as a reserve 3rd baseman, as voted by the players. This will be his 7th All-Star Game, 3rd as a Tiger. Cabrera is hitting .376/.541/.917, with a .315 BA, 16 HR and 62 RBI. Cabrera has now been named an All-Star at 3 positions, OF, 1B and 3B.
Notable snubs? The biggest would be CF Austin Jackson, who is 4th in AL BA and 6th in OPS, all while playing elite level defense at one of baseball's hardest positions. Unfortunately, Jackson's recent DL stint likely derailed his chances. You can also make a case set-up man Joaquin Benoit was snubbed. Jim Leyland would agree, being he placed him on his managerial All-Star ballot. Benoit has a 2.25 ERA in 36 appearances.
In the AL Final Vote balloting, your choices are Jonathan Broxton, Yu Darvish, Ernesto Frieri, Jason Hammel and Jake Peavy...but not Austin Jackson.
