Pitching Matchup: Justin Masterson (7-9, 4.47 ERA) vs. Anibal Sanchez (5-8, 4.11 ERA)

Masterson was an all-or-nothing pitcher in July, alternating three starts of 7 IP, 0-1 ER with three starts in which he allowed 20 runs in just 14 1/3 innings. He was roughed up by the Minnesota Twins in his last start, giving up 8 earned runs on 7 hits in 5 2/3 innings. In general, Masterson has struggled on the road this season. He has a 6.05 ERA away from Progressive Field and is striking out 2.3 fewer batters per 9 innings. Those struggles should translate nicely (for the Tigers) tonight, as Masterson is 0-2 with a 4.85 ERA in his career at Comerica Park.

Sanchez drew the short end of the stick in his first start with the Tigers, facing the highest scoring offense in the majors in the Toronto Blue Jays. Tonight should be much better for the 28 year old right-hander, who will be making his Comerica Park debut (no pressure, right?). Sanchez pitched well in May when he faced the Indians as a member of the Marlins, but his offense Doug Fister'd him in a 2-0 loss.

Outlook

The Indians lost 5 straight games after handing Justin Verlander a loss on July 26th, falling 7 games behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox (note: this is being written before the Indians-Royals game on 8/2). They allowed 41 runs in that time and have only scored 11. Fans are already calling for Manny Acta's job. The Tigers need to bury Cleveland this weekend. In my opinion, anything but a sweep is unacceptable.

Prediction

Sanchez makes his first home start as a Tiger a memorable one with a strong performance and a W.
