UPDATE 10:10 PM: The Detroit Tigers report the MRI on Max Scherzer's fatigued pitching shoulder showed no structural damage. He will not throw for a few days and be re-evaluated.
Original story: Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Max Scherzer was pulled from tonight's start against the Oakland Athletics after 2 innings and 44 pitches. Darin Downs took the mound to start the 3rd inning.
The Tigers reported Scherzer left the game due to what is being called "right shoulder fatigue" and will undergo an MRI.
Scherzer had allowed 1 run on 2 hits, walking 2 and striking out 4, showing no signs of distress.
On the season, Scherzer is 16-6 with a 3.77 ERA, leading the majors with 224 strike outs. Scherzer has been one of the best pitchers in the game over the 2nd half, posting an 8 -1 record and 2.61 ERA since the All-Star break.
If Scherzer is lost to the Tigers for any amount of time, it would be a major blow to their already fading postseason hopes.
