Miguel Cabrera named Sporting News 2013 MLB Player of the Year

In a vote of his peers, Sporting News has named Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera MLB Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Cabrera lead all major leaguers in batting average at .348, OBP at .442, slugging at .636 and OPS at 1.078. He was denied a second straight Triple Crown by Orioles' first baseman Chris Davis (and a groin injury) finishing second in home runs with 44 and RBIs with 137.

Cabrera won the award with relative ease, topping Davis 141-35. Mike Trout of the Angels was third with nine votes, followed by the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw and  Andrew McCutchen of the Pirates with eight and the Diamondbacks' Paul Goldschmidt earned three votes. Five players received one vote each.

Cabrera has joined some very select company. He's only the fourth player to earn back-to-back Sporting News Player of the Year awards, a list which includes Ted Williams (1941-42), Joe Morgan (1975-76), and Albert Pujols (2008-09).

This is the fifth time a Tiger has won the Sporting News award. Along with Cabrera's two Player of the Year wins, Hal Newhouser grabbed the award in 1945, Denny McClain's 31 win season took the award in 1968 and Justin Verlander was the winner in 2011.
