The Tigers have announced that outfielder/ third baseman Matt Tuiasosopo has been claimed off waivers by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tuiasosopo hit .244/.351/.415 with seven homers while playing three different positions, but mostly playing the right handed part of a platoon along with Andy Dirks in left field.
Tuiasosopo was signed by the Tigers in the off season last year after being let go by the Seattle Mariners, and was a surprise addition making the team. His season totals don't tell the full story of Tui's season. The right handed slugger hit .329 .447 .624 1.071 before the All Star break, but just .152 .239 .190 .429 after the break, being left off the playoff roster entirely. Curiously, Tui also hit just .216 .336 .371 .707 against left handed pitching in 116 At Bats, which is the role that the Tigers had in mind for him.
In other moves, the Tigers declined the $ 3.25 million option on reliever Jose Veras and also put reliever Darin Downs on waivers. Downs was claimed by the Houston Astros, who have first crack at all players on waivers this off season. The Tigers will need to replace Tuiasosopo's right handed bat in the lineup before spring training.
