Nick Castellanos is headed to Triple-A Toledo to work on his play in the outfield.
The Tigers' top prospect, who shifted from third base to the outfield last year, will play left field for the Mud Hens. That and several other moves to ship players to minor league teams were announced on Tuesday.
Without question Castellanos had a great spring in major-league camp, hitting .360 with a 1.044 OPS. Fortunately the Tigers were able to overcome any temptation that may have been there and send the 21-year-old to the minors where he could continue to hone his abilities before the inevitable callup.
He kept good humor about the move, telling Tom Gage of the News, "technically, I'm still going north -- just not as far north."
Another young outfielder, Tyler Collins, was sent to minor-league camp. He hit .345 with a 1.030 OPS. Like Castellanos, he plays left field, so he may end up assigned to Double-A Erie.
Other assignments: pitcher Duane Below was sent to Toledo, along with pitcher Jose Ortega and catcher Bryan Holiday. Infielder Hernan Perez was sent to Erie. Infielder Argenis Diaz and pitcher Nick Bell were sent to minor-league camp.
