Minor League Recaps: 5/8/13

It was an offensive struggle across the system on Wednesday, as the 4 clubs combined to score just 7 runs. But the affiliates still managed to go 2-2 thanks to strong pitching performances, particularly in Lakeland and West Michigan.

AAA Toledo Mud Hens (9-25)

L, 3-0 vs. Rochester. Ramon Garcia and Kenny Faulk combined to pitch pretty well; but the offense only managed 4 hits, with none of them going for extra bases. Kyle Gibson of Rochester was straight #shoving on Wednesday, giving Tigers fans a glimpse of what they might see in the future from one of the Twins' top prospects.

-LHP Kenny Faulk: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K.

-LF Nick Castellanos: 1-4, 2 K

-1B Jordan Lennerton: 1-3, BB

-RF Avisail Garcia: 1-3, 2 K (10-19, 6 K, 0 BB with Toledo. All 10 hits have been singles, however.)

AA Erie SeaWolves (19-12)

L, 4-2 vs. Akron. The loss snapped Erie's 7 game winning streak, and the offense was pretty much entirely based on a Zach Maggard 2 run single in the early innings. Chalk it up to an off day, as the Erie offense has been hot.

-RHP Michael Morrison: 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K.

-CF Daniel Fields: 1-3, BB, K

-LF Tyler Collins: 1-3, BB, K

-3B Wade Gaynor: 1-4, 2B (4), R

-C Zach Maggard: 1-4, 2 RBI

A+ Lakeland Flying Tigers (12-19)

W, 3-2 vs. Jupiter. Drew VerHagen's second start after coming off the DL went much better than his first one, as he shut down the Hammerhead's offense all day. Clutch bullpen performance from Melvin Mercedes highlighted the win, while Jason Krizan came up with a clutch hit in the late innings for the win.

-RHP Drew VerHagen: 6 2/3 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, ND

-RHP Melvin Mercedes: 1 2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, W (2-0). James Chipman of TigsTown was at the game, and tweeted a picture of the radar gun reading "98" while Mercedes was pitching. #shoving.

-LF Jason Krizan: 2-3, 3B (1), 2 RBI

-RF Mike Hernandez: 2-4, RBI

-2B Jordan Dean (Central Michigan!!): 1-2, 2B (1), 2 R, 2 BB. First career High-A hit. Congrats!

A West Michigan Whitecaps (14-16)

W, 2-0 vs. Bowling Green. The Whitecaps got a 2 R HR from Jeff Holm in the 1st inning, and that was all they would need as Jordan John turned in the best performance of his young professional career, and solid work from Brennan Smith and Jose Valdez kept BG scoreless.

-LHP Jordan John: 6 2/3 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, W (1-2)

-RHP Brennan Smith: 1 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K
