Jose Valverde accepts assignment to minors, will report to Triple-A Toledo

Jose Valverde accepted his assignment to the minor leagues and will now pitch for the Toledo Mud Hens.

Shortly after the end of today's 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the Tigers announced that former closer Jose Valverde had accepted his assignment to Triple-A Toledo. Valverde, who was designated for assignment last week, cleared waivers earlier this week. He had the option of accepting the assignment to the minor leagues or voiding his contract to become a free agent.

Jim Leyland was asked about the move, and his answer may seem a bit ominous to the Valverde detractors in the fanbase.

"I'm glad. I'm glad he's staying in the organization. We'll just see if he can possibly go down there and get it straightened out."

As for the repercussions of this move, Valverde's assignment means he is no longer on the 40-man roster. There is currently one empty slot, which may be used for Valverde if he is recalled. It may also be reserved for another call-up -- I can think of a good one -- or for a possible acquisition at the trade deadline.
