Omar Infante to 15-day disabled list; Hernan Perez recalled

Top 2B prospect Hernan Perez has been summoned from Double-A Erie in the wake of Omar Infante's leg injury

USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers announced Omar Infante has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 4. To replace Infante on the roster, the Tigers have called up top second base prospect Hernan Perez.

In my top 30 rankings, linked here, Perez checks in at 11. He's got a nice glove at second base, can play shortstop in a pinch, and barrels the ball well. He's got a line drive swing, and should hit for a bit of average, although the power is limited at this point. Perez can run a bit, as he's accumulated 24 steals at Double-A Erie already this season.

Perez's Erie stat line looks like this: .300/.324/.422/.746 OPS with 28 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, and 35 RBI.

He should have no trouble as a stop gap for Infante until after the all star break. I do not think that Perez is capable of playing second base every day at the major league level for an extended period of time right now. He has the potential to assume that role in the future. However, Perez will be more than adequate for the time being.

Perez is in the lineup for tonight's game, batting eighth and playing second.
