Peralta to begin working out with Tigers on Wednesday: No decision on status

Jason Beck has reported that Jhonny Peralta will begin working out with the Tigers on Wednesday, although no decision has been made on whether the club will activate him.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

Jhonny Peralta will begin working out with the Tigers on Wednesday, according to a report from's Jason Beck on Twitter.

Mlive's Chris Iott followed up with a quote from Tigers' President, Dave Dombrowski:

Dombrowski: "There really is an obligation that comes to giving him a chance to come back and we'll make a baseball decision at some point."
— Chris Iott (@Chris_Iott) September 10, 2013

Major League Baseball rules permit suspended players to work out with the team, but they must leave the premises before gates open for official games.

Since the Tigers have no minor league affiliates participating in playoffs any longer, the only other opportunity that Peralta would have to work out within the organization would be in the Florida Instructional league, which begins on Sept. 19. "Instructs" are generally a place where prospects go to get specific instruction on a particular aspect of the game, or for players rehabilitating after an injury to continue their conditioning.

Peralta's suspension will be over on Sept. 26, making him eligible to rejoin the team in time for the last three games of the regular season on Sept. 27 in Miami. He is already eligible for the post season roster.

No decision has been made yet on whether Peralta will be activated. Dombrowski did say if he does rejoins the team, Peralta will not be brought back to be the everyday shortstop. He will be working out around the infield and outfield.

The fact that he is working out with the club means that the Tigers are at least keeping their options open.

Which, really, is all that Kurt asked for Monday in the News.
