DETROIT With Tuesday night's loss to the Kansas City Royals, and the need for relief help after short outings by Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, the Detroit Tigers called up right-handed relief pitcher Chad Smith from Triple-A Toledo. The move was first reported by John Wagner of the Toledo Blade. The Tigers confirmed the report Wednesday morning.

Smith, who retains a 0.955 WHIP with the Toledo Mud Hens in 22 innings of relief and a 1.64 ERA, will wear number 55 for the Tigers.

In a corresponding move, the Tigers designated Evan Reed for assignment to Toledo. The Tigers have 10 days to either trade or release Reed, who has the option to become a free agent if he clears waivers. In 27 appearances covering 27 innings, Reed posted an 01 record and 4.88 ERA.
