DETROIT — With Tuesday night's loss to the Kansas City Royals, and the need for relief help after short outings by Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, the Detroit Tigers called up right-handed relief pitcher Chad Smith from Triple-A Toledo. The move was first reported by John Wagner of the Toledo Blade. The Tigers confirmed the report Wednesday morning.

Smith, who retains a 0.955 WHIP with the Toledo Mud Hens in 22 innings of relief and a 1.64 ERA, will wear number 55 for the Tigers.
#Tigers Smith: I called my mom, my mom and my dad. I put them on speakerphone. They both started to cry so it was a pretty special moment.

In a corresponding move, the Tigers designated Evan Reed for assignment to Toledo. The Tigers have 10 days to either trade or release Reed, who has the option to become a free agent if he clears waivers. In 27 appearances covering 27⅔ innings, Reed posted an 0–1 record and 4.88 ERA.
