The 2014 MLB All-Star Game rosters were announced this evening, and three Tigers made the team. Miguel Cabrera will be the American League's starting first baseman, while Victor Martinez, and Max Scherzer also made the roster. The Tigers are tied for second in the American League with three selections; the Oakland Athletics lead the lead with six players.
Cabrera's All-Star nod is the ninth of his career, and fifth since joining the Tigers in 2008. This is the second consecutive year that he was voted as a starter by the fans, and the first time at first base. The two-time AL MVP is hitting .311/.371/.540 with 14 home runs and a league-leading 32 doubles heading into tonight's game with the Tampa Bay Rays.
Victor Martinez finished well behind Nelson Cruz in the fan vote at designated hitter, but his ability to play first base in a pinch likely played a role in his selection over Boston's David Ortiz. Martinez's numbers were well deserving, however. Martinez is hitting .328/.391/.599 with 21 home runs and 55 RBI. He has only struck out 23 times all season long, and ranks 18th in the AL with 2.5 WAR despite a massive negative positional adjustment as a designated hitter. This is Martinez's fifth All-Star nod, his first since 2010.
Max Scherzer probably won't start this year's All-Star game, but he will be on the roster for the second consecutive season thanks to a 10-3 record and 3.47 ERA. His peripheral numbers are even more impressive, as he has a 2.88 FIP, 2.93 SIERA, and a 4.21 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Scherzer is currently slated to start on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers, and should be available to pitch in the All-Star Game.
Ian Kinsler was leading the fan vote at second base when the first update was released, but was since passed by Seattle's Robinson Cano. Kinsler is hitting .306/.342/.486 with 11 home runs and 60 runs scored, and ranks third in the American League with 3.8 WAR. Despite the gaudy numbers, Kinsler was left off the roster behind Cano and Houston's Jose Altuve.
Rick Porcello made a late push to make this year's All-Star team, tossing 25 consecutive shutout innings leading up to tonight's start against the Tampa Bay Rays. However, both he and Anibal Sanchez were also left off the American League roster. Porcello is one of five candidates in a fan vote for the final All-Star roster spot.
