DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera and Max Scherzer have been selected for the Tigers Player and Pitcher of the Month awards, respectively, for the month of September.
After a rough August in which Cabrera made little-to-no contact, needing to be treated with kid gloves for a bone spur in his right ankle, Cabrera has gotten back to mashing baseballs. September has been more reflective of the MVP-like hitter fans are used to seeing, hitting .394 with 19 runs scored, 10 doubles, eight home runs, and 18 RBI in 25 games this month.
Cabrera currently leads the American League with a .737 slugging percentage in September. He is tied for the lead with 10 doubles and eight home runs, ranks second with 39 hits, third with a .394 batting average, sixth with 19 runs scored, seventh with a .425 on-base percentage and tied for seventh with 17 RBI.
Scherzer has made five starts in September and has a 3–0 record with a 2.48 ERA in 32 2/3 innings pitched, with nine earned runs allowed. Scherzer has 30 hits allowed, 13 walks and 32 strikeouts in that time.
The Tigers are 5–0 on games where Scherzer starts for the Tigers. He has given up just one home run in that time. Scherzer ranks tied for seventh in the American League with three wins in September.
