The Silver Slugger Award is a thing that has a Wikipedia entry, thank god, so I can tell you with relative certainly that the award was invented in 1980, and is sponsored by Louisville Slugger. It is an annual award given to the best hitters at each position in each of the leagues, National and American, and signifies that these hitters (or "sluggers") are pretty good, that they deserve an award, and that Louisville Slugger would like some extra advertising time.
Personally, I doubt the real value of these awards, because I just looked at a list of past winners, and Babe Ruth didn't even win a single one of them. Nice try, Louisville Slugger.
Alright, enough silliness. Since 1980, there have been 18 Tigers players who have won the award, some of them multiple times, making a grand total of 33 individual Silver Slugger Awards that have been handed out to guys wearing the Old English D.
See if you can name all of the Detroit Tigers who have won the award as Tigers in the past 35 years. (Hint: two of them literally just won the award this past season.)
(Hat-tip to our sister site at gaslampball.com, SB Nations' San Diego Padres blog, for thinking of this idea first. Also for having a team site name that references flatulence, luminary devices, and sports all at once.)
