Austin Green falls a triple shy of the cycle in Erie SeaWolves win

Toledo Mud Hens 4, Norfolk Tides 2 (box)

The Tides took a 2-0 lead on a two-out RBI double from Dariel Alvarez in the top of the third inning. From that point on, the Tides were limited to just five baserunners in the final six innings. The Mud Hens, meanwhile, scored two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the score, then took the lead for good in the fourth. Jefry Marte hit a pair of doubles and Dixon Machado reached base four times. Tim Melville worked six strong innings for his third win of the season, and Bruce Rondon had his second strong outing in a row, working a scoreless ninth for the save.

Erie SeaWolves 7, Akron Rubber Ducks 5 (box)

The SeaWolves broke out with a five-run sixth inning, taking a 7-1 lead over the Rubber Ducks. Akron did their best to make it close, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but strong work from Confesor Lara and Jeff Ferrell out of the bullpen sealed the win for Erie. Austin Kubitza notched his fifth win of the season despite allowing five runs on 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Catcher Austin Green was the big bat for the SeaWolves, falling a triple shy of the cycle. Green and shortstop Jared Reaves combined to go 6-for-8 with four extra base hits at the bottom of the Erie lineup.

COMING UP NEXT: Josh Turley (5-5, 3.18 ERA) will look to move his win-loss record above .500 today as the SeaWolves and Rubber Ducks kick off a doubleheader. Warwick Saupold (1-5, 5.32 ERA) will start game two for Erie. Adam Plutko (2-0, 2.45 ERA) and Zach Nuding (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Akron.

South Bend Cubs 3, West Michigan Whitecaps 2 (box)

Whitecaps starter A.J. Ladwig allowed three early runs and his offense was unable to catch up, handing him his fifth loss of the season. Ladwig worked 7 1/3 innings, striking out four and walking one. The Whitecaps managed eight hits, but Ross Kivett's two-run homer in the sixth inning was their only extra base hit.
