Christin Stewart stays red-hot for West Michigan Whitecaps

Toledo Mud Hens 5, Lehigh Valley IronPigs 1 (box)

Steven Moya hit a home run in the sixth inning to take the lead on Lehigh Valley, which the Mud Hens would not give up. Starter Tim Melville was shaky despite allowing just one unearned run, striking out four and walking five. He got the win after Angel Nesbitt and Guido Knudson pitched four solid innings of relief. Four different Mud Hens reached base twice, with Daniel Fields leading the charge.

Erie SeaWolves 8, Altoona Curve 1 (box)

Tommy Collier was artful last night, combining with two relievers to hold Altoona to just two hits. With an ERA of 2.24 in Double-A, Collier is certainly increasing his stock. Wade Gaynor cracked the game wide open with a three-run shot to take a 5-1 lead in the seventh inning. Dominic Ficociello and Alberto Gonzalez each had a pair of hits for the SeaWolves.

Clearwater Threshers 5, Lakeland Flying Tigers 3 (box)

Trent Szkutnik (try spelling that name) was roughed up by Clearwater, giving up five runs in five innings. The six through nine hitters in Lakeland's lineup only managed one hit, although Raph Rhymes and Javier Betancourt each had a pair of hits. Will Clinard had a nice relief appearance for the beleaguered Lakeland staff.

West Michigan Whitecaps 4, South Bend Cubs 0 (box)

Christin Stewart is off to a smoking start in West Michigan, collecting three hits last night and an RBI. Ross Kivett's excellent season continued for the Whitecaps as he had another two hits. Fernando Perez went four innings for West Michigan and Trey Teakell went the next four, which proved highly successful.

Connecticut Tigers 4, Hudson Valley Renegades 2 (box)

If you're going to do all your damage in one inning, you may as well make it work. The Tigers didn't score after the first, but the lead they built held up. Victor Padron got the game started off on the right foot; he's now batting .370 on the year. Corey Baptist had the big run-scoring double the proved the game-winner. Spencer Watkins, who earned the win, now has a minsicule 1.45 ERA on the season.
