Louisville Bats 8, Toledo Mud Hens 5 (box)
Louisville slugged past Toledo starter Kyle Ryan, putting up three runs in the first and second innings. Meanwhile, the Mud Hens could not overcome the deficit despite scratching out nine runs. Former Tiger Collin Balestar got the save for Louisville. Steven Moya added two extra base hits for Toledo.
Ryan (L, 0-9): 5 IP, 11 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO
Moya: 2-4, HR, 2B, 2 R, RBI
Fields: 2-4, 2 RBI
Machado: 1-5, 2B, R
COMING UP NEXT: Matt Boyd will make his Toledo Mud Hens debut in Louisville tonight at 6:05 p.m. EDT.
New Britain Rock Cats 6, Erie SeaWolves 5 (box)
Erie fell behind 5-1 early and could not pull off the late rally against New Britain. The losing pitcher was Austin Kubitza, who now has an ERA over six on the season in Double-A. Matt Crouse excelled in relief of Kubitza. Jacoby Jones did not record a hit in his SeaWolves debut, but he collected an RBI and scored a run.
Kubitza (L, 6-10): 5 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO
Crouse: 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 SO
Ficociello: 2-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Jones: 0-3, R, RBI
COMING UP NEXT: The SeaWolves start off August with Derek Hankins (5-7, 5.36) against New Britain at 7:05 p.m. EDT.
Lakeland Flying Tigers 9, Charlotte Stone Crabs 7 (box)
I'm pretty sure someone in Lakeland had the bright idea of scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth just so I'd have to spell out the winning pitcher, Trent Szkutnik. He relieved new Tigers prospect Jairo Labourt, who had a rocky debut while walking four. In a funny twist, the starter for Charlotte was a guy also associated with trades involving David Price: Drew Smyly, who was making a rehab start. The Flying Tigers roughed up the former Tiger for nine hits in three and a third innings. Jiwan James hit the big eighth inning homer for Lakeland.
Szkutnik (W, 1-4): 4 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO
Mayberry (SV, 1): 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO
Labourt: 4 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO
James: 2-5, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI
COMING UP NEXT: The Flying Tigers have a home date with the Stone Crabs, with Locke St. John (2-10, 5.00) on the bump.
Fort Wayne TinCaps 2, West Michigan Whitecaps 1 (box)
The TinCaps scored two runs in the ninth inning to walk off on the Whitecaps and waste an excellent outing from A.J. Ladwig. Pitcher Dominic Moreno did himself no favors by committing the game-ending error. Zach Shepherd had the lone RBI on a very quiet evening for West Michigan's offense, scoring Joey Pankake.
Moreno (BS, 1) (L, 0-1): 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 SO
Ladwig: 7 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO
Shepherd: 2-3, 3B, RBI
Pankake: 2-4, 2B, R
COMING UP NEXT: West Michigan turns to Jeff Thompson (4-9, 4.50) tonight in Fort Wayne at 7:05 p.m. EDT.
