Steven Moya hit a pair of home runs and drove in five of the Mud Hens' 10 runs on Opening Day at Fifth Third Field. Toledo rocked Louisville starter A.J. Morris, scoring eight runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth. Nate Schierholtz added a pair of hits, including an RBI double. Wynton Bernard went 0-for-5 with a walk in his Triple-A debut. Starter Matt Boyd worked six innings, striking out seven.

The SeaWolves jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the second inning off Thunder starter Brady Lail. Alberto Gonzalez led the way for Erie, collecting a pair of doubles and four hits in total. Catcher Austin Green hit a three-run homer in the second, while Gustavo Nunez drove in a pair of runs. SeaWolves starter Cory Riordan only worked four innings, so reliever Gabe Hemmer ended up with the win. The SeaWolves staff combined for 10 strikeouts.

Alex Wilson was rocked in a minor league rehab start, allowing three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings of work. Centerfielder Cameron Maybin didn't fare much better, striking out twice and drawing a walk. Michael Gerber hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, while Christin Stewart and A.J. Simcox went hitless in their Advanced-A debuts. Endrys Briceno also struggled, allowing six runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. Yankees top prospect Jorge Mateo was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs and RBI.

West Michigan Whitecaps 9, South Bend Cubs 4 (box)
Brett Pirtle and Steven Fuentes drove in three runs apiece as the Whitecaps exploded for 11 hits in their season opener against South Bend. The Whitecaps jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after three innings, and their pitching staff cruised to an easy win. Starter Spenser Watkins allowed a pair of runs in 4 2/3 innings, while reliever Jonathan Maciel scattered four hits in 1 1/3 innings for the win. Jose Azocar and Josh Lester also collected a pair of hits for the Whitecaps.
