Beer of the Series 4.50: Kansas City Royals

It's been a rare thing to say this season, but the Tigers took care of business and did exactly what they needed to do in Minnesota. To be frank, the Twins are not good. Not good at all. The Tigers should be expected to beat them more times than not. This season, that's exactly what they've done, compiling a 15-4 record against the fightin' Joe Mauers, including a staggering 9-0 at Target Field. The last time that success against a division foe was matched was 2013 against Cleveland (a fact that the locals like to point out around here when they talk about this season as a mark of revenge).

Over the last five years, the Tigers have averaged a little less than 45 wins in the division (in 2011 and 2012, they played 72 division games; since then, 76). Unfortunately, they currently only have a 35-34 record in the division this season, which marks a precipitous decline. Compare this to Cleveland's 44-22 mark, and it's easy to see why they are seven games up in the division. Even if the Tigers win their next seven, it will be their second lowest victory total over the last six seasons, barely topping last season's 41-35 mark. You'll need some beer over the next week, that's for sure.

Over on the West Coast (of Michigan), Saugatuck Brewing Company has been churning out great food and beer for over a decade. This series will look at their Third Bear Ale.

As it says on the label, not too hoppy, not too sweet. While that claim is easier said than done, this beer accomplishes it quite well, using a malt forward approach to push flavors of caramel & coffee and a slightly dry finish with an earthy hop bite. The beer pairs well with dessert or a burger, and at 5.5% ABV and 25 IBUs, it's an easy drinker to pair well with the cooler temps and earlier sunsets.

Saugatuck Brewing Company is located in Douglas, Michigan.
