With so many teams in the thick of this year’s AL Wild Card race, it can be tough to keep your scoreboard watching straight. Fear not, though: Bless You Boys has you covered. Over the last two weeks of the season we will update you on the ups and downs of the AL playoff picture, and how each contending team fared on a nightly basis.
Cleveland Indians 10, Chicago White Sox 4
Jose Ramirez homered and drove in four runs, while Trevor Bauer held the White Sox to four runs on seven hits in 7- 2/3 innings. White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton left the game with an apparent shoulder injury after crashing into the wall in center field.
Impact: The Indians reduced their Magic Number to three with a convincing win over Chicago. Cleveland remains seven games up on the Tigers with just nine games to play.
Boston Red Sox 2, Tampa Bay Rays 1
David Ortiz continued his magical walk toward retirement, going 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the Red Sox’s ninth consecutive win at Boston. Mookie Betts went 3-for-4 and Drew Pomerantz pitched five innings of one-run ball for Boston.
Impact: The Red Sox have opened up a 5 1⁄2-game lead over Toronto in the American League’s East division.
Toronto Blue Jays 9, New York Yankees 0
Troy Tulowitzki drove in four runs and Francisco Liriano threw six shutout innings for the Jays. Josh Donaldson also homered for Toronto. Rookie catcher Gary Sanchez went 2-for-4 while his teammates combined for a 1-for-26 performance for the Yankees.
Impact: The Jays maintained their one-game lead over Detroit for the first wild card playoff spot, while the Yankees fall four games behind Detroit for the final playoff spot.
Baltimore Orioles 3, Arizona Diamondbacks 2
Mark Trumbo hit a walk-off home run in the 12th inning against his old team as the Orioles kept pace with Detroit at a half-game behind. Arizona held a two-run lead in the eighth inning before Baltimore tied it up in the bottom of the ninth. All three Baltimore runs came by way of the home run ball. Shelby Miller pitched six scoreless innings while allowing just three hits for Arizona.
Impact: The Orioles remain a half-game behind the Tigers for the second wild card playoff spot.
Los Angeles Angels 10, Houston Astros 6
The Angels scored six times in the ninth inning, all charged to Astros’ closer Ken Giles. Yunel Escobar hit a two-run homer to tie the game and the Halos tacked on four more runs, three after Giles was removed with the bases loaded. Houston shortstop Carlos Correa left the game after injuring his shoulder on a diving catch attempt. His status is unknown. The teams play each other seven times in the final 10 games of the season.
Impact: The Astros drop to 2 1⁄2 games behind Detroit for the second wild card spot.
Seattle Mariners 10, Minnesota Twins 1
James Paxton held the Twins to one run in seven innings, striking out nine without a walk as Seattle hammered Minnesota. Nelson Cruz hit a two-run homer and added a two-run double for the Mariners.
Impact: Seattle remains two games behind the Tigers for the second wild card spot.
The Texas Rangers became the first American League team to clinch their division with a win over the Oakland A’s. The Rangers have the league’s best record and are on track to host the winner of the wild card playoff game in the postseason.
