The Marlins’ pregame tribute to Jose Fernandez was hard to watch

The Marlins’ heartfelt tribute to Fernandez was the only thing worth watching on Monday night.

Usually, words do justice to a situation. But in this case, none can. Only pictures. On Monday night, the baseball world turned to Miami as they paid an emotional and heartfelt tribute to their beloved teammate and friend, Jose Fernandez, who passed away on Sunday in a tragic boating accident.

Before the game, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria spoke with the media and said that Fernandez’s jersey would be retired, never to be worn again after Monday. In remembrance, the team is wearing No. 16 jerseys with Fernandez’s name rather than their own tonight.

Regardless of your rooting interest, be it the Tigers or another, this may be one of the most gut-wrenching things you’ll watch. If you didn’t get a chance to see it live, Fox Sports Florida uploaded it to a video on Twitter.

These were also some of the images from that touching ceremony:

To top it off, Dee Gordon hit a leadoff home run.
