Tigers place Miguel Cabrera on 10 day disabled list, call up John Hicks

Groin strain sidelines Tigers’ star

MLB: Detroit Tigers at Atlanta Braves Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers have placed Miguel Cabrera on the 10 disabled list and recalled catcher- first baseman John Hicks from Toledo. Cabrera left Friday’s game in Minnesota with a groin strain, and had an MRI on Saturday morning. The club waited for the results of the test before deciding to put Cabrera on the disabled list.

Cabrera suffered the injury while diving for a ground ball in the Tigers’ 6- 3 loss to the Twins in Friday’s game. His loss is another blow to a lineup that is already missing Jose Iglesias, who is on the seven day disabled list due to a concussion, and J.D. Martinez who has been out with a foot injury since the start of the season.

Hicks has mainly been a catcher in his career. The Tigers claimed him off waivers from the Twins just a year ago this month. He was the only available position player on the Tigers’ 40 man roster. The club recently signed veteran first baseman James Loney to a minor league contract, but he is not on the roster and has only been in Toledo for a week.
