Tigers prospect Steven Moya hits game-winning home run for Mud Hens

Scores, news, and notes from the Detroit Tigers farm system on Friday, May 12, 2017.

Toledo Mud Hens 6, Durham Bulls 3 (F/12) (box)

Steven Moya hit a three-run homer in the top of the 12th inning to deliver a big road win for the Mud Hens. Moya’s homer was his fifth of the season and third this week. Jason Krizan and Omar Infante helped pace Toledo’s offense, combining for seven of their 12 hits. Starter Warwick Saupold struck out eight in 5 23 innings, and Jeff Ferrell picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief.

Krizan: 4-5, 2B, 2 R
Infante: 3-5, R, RBI
Moya: 1-4, HR, R, 3 RBI, BB, 2 SO
Saupold: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO

Coming up next: Drew VerHagen (2-1, 4.70 ERA) will start for Toledo as they continue their road series at Durham.

Hartford Yard Goats 3, Erie SeaWolves 1 (box)

Mike Gerber hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth to break a scoreless tie, but Ruben Alaniz and the SeaWolves defense coughed up three runs (all unearned) to lose a heartbreaker. Gerber and Christin Stewart combined for four of five Erie’s hits, with Stewart collecting a triple. Starter Myles Jaye deserved better after throwing six shutout innings with six strikeouts and just two hits allowed.

Gerber: 2-4, HR, R, RBI
Stewart: 2-4, 3B, SO
Jaye: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, BB, 6 SO

Coming up next: Tyler Alexander (1-3, 5.08 ERA) will look to bounce back from a rough outing as he and the SeaWolves continue their series against the Yard Goats.

Lakeland Flying Tigers 5, Florida Fire Frogs 1 (box)

Matt Hall allowed a run in the top of the first inning, but shut the door the rest of the way to earn his third win of the season. Hall held the Fire Frogs to just four hits while striking out six in seven innings. Offensively, Lakeland scored three runs off top prospect Touki Toussaint and added two more off the Florida bullpen. Amazingly, they did so on just five hits, all singles. The kicker? Three Florida pitchers combined for nine walks.

Valdes: 2-4, R, RBI
Kivett: 1-3, R, RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO, SB
Hall (W): 7.0 IP, 4 H, ER, BB, 6 SO

Coming up next: Beau Burrows will take the mound for the Flying Tigers in their series finale against the Fire Frogs.

West Michigan Whitecaps 9, Burlington Bees 6 (box)

Austin Sodders wasn’t as sharp as usual, allowing six hits and four walks in five innings, but he limited the Bees to just one run as his offense opened up an early 8-1 lead. The bottom of the Whitecaps lineup did the dirty work, with their last four hitters combining for 10 of the team’s 15 hits. Catcher Austin Athmann had a four-hit night, while Josh Lester had three hits of his own. Six different Whitecaps hitters drove in runs.

Athmann: 4-5, R, RBI, SO, SB
Lester: 3-5, 2B, R, 2 RBI, SO
Salter: 2-5, 2B, R, RBI, SO
Sodders (W): 5.0 IP, 6 H, ER, 4 BB, 2 SO

Coming up next: Gregory Soto (3-0, 0.00 ERA) still has not allowed an earned run this season. He will look to continue that streak against the Bees on Saturday.
