J.D. Martinez’s 2 hits not enough as the Flying Tigers lose

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers farm system for Friday May 6, 2017.

Toledo Mud Hens 4, Louisville Bats 3 (F/10) (box)

Buck Farmer continues to impress early in 2017. The right-hander spun seven fine innings, punching out eight on Friday night. The Bats pieced together a rally in the third inning around several singles and a wild pitch from Farmer. They pushed across three runs, but from that point on Farmer slammed the door shut, without a runner advancing beyond first base. The offense fought their way back with single runs in the sixth and seventh. Edward Mujica and Arcenio Leon gave them three scoreless innings to work with as they fought to pull this one out. In the tenth inning, Steven Moya walked it off with an RBI single to score Alex Presley.

Presley: 3-5, 2 R, RBI, HR
Navarro: 2-4, R, RBI, HR, BB, SO
Farmer: 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 8 SO
Leon (W, 1-1): 2.0 IP, SO

Coming Up Next: William Cuevas (1-2, 6.19 ERA) will look to make it three in a row for the Mud Hens as they take on the Bats in game two of this three-game weekend set.

Palm Beach Cardinals 4, Lakeland Flying Tigers 2 (box)

The Flying Tigers had some extra firepower on hand in the person of one J.D. Martinez, but it wasn’t enough. A three run rally in the second inning off starter Kyle Dowdy was the difference in this one. Martinez doubled and singled on the night. Ross Kivett added a solo shot in the eighth to bring the game within reach, but the Flying Tigers couldn’t muster a late rally.

Martinez: 2-4, R, 2B, SO
Kivett: 2-4, R, RBI, HR
Verlander: 2-3, RBI, BB
Dowdy (L, 2-2): 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, BB, 2 SO

Coming Up Next: Matt Hall (1-3, 7.64 ERA) gets the call on Saturday as the Flying Tigers continue a weekend road series in Palm Beach.

Kane County Cougars 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 5 (box)

The Cougars jumped on starter Anthony Castro with a four-run third inning. Castro did himself in by issuing three walks in the inning, and then surrendering a two-run shot to Kyle Smith with a man on. The Whitecaps answered back with a three-run fifth, but reliever Joe Navilhon gave it all back, allowing three runs in the sixth to take the loss.

Robson: 1-2, R, RBI, 3 BB, SO
Gibson: 1-3, 2 R, 2 BB, SO
Savage: 2-4, 3B
Castro: 3.0 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, H, HR, 3 BB, 2 SO
Jimenez: 2.1 IP, H, BB, 5 SO

Coming Up Next: Austin Sodders (2-0, 0.90 ERA) will look to continue his fine start as he gets the call Saturday night.
