The MLB All-Star Game is the main event this week at Marlins Park in Miami, and the Detroit Tigers will send two players to the sunny state of Florida. Starting pitcher Michael Fulmer was originally Detroit’s sole All-Star, but since he is starting against the Cleveland Indians on Sunday he is ineligible to play in the All-Star game itself. Left fielder Justin Upton was selected in addition to Fulmer and will be eligible to participate.
While the All-Star game is without question the headliner, there are three days of events to keep an eye on, beginning Sunday.
The All-Star Futures Game kicks off the festivities on Sunday (4 p.m. ET, MLB Network). Representing the Detroit Tigers are right-handed pitcher Beau Burrows, the team’s first-round selection from the 2015 MLB amateur draft, and left-handed pitcher Jairo Labourt, whom Detroit acquired at the 2015 trade deadline in the deal that sent David Price to Toronto. Both Burrows and Labourt currently play for the Tigers’ Double-A affiliate, the Erie SeaWolves.
Other prospects of interest include Chicago White Sox infielder Yoan Moncada, Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and New York Mets shortstop Amed Rosario. The minor leaguers are split up into two teams of 25 players each, Team U.S. vs. Team World. Burrows will pitch for Team U.S., while Labourt, a native of the Dominican Republic, will pitch for Team World.
The Legends & Celebrity Softball Game will also take place on Sunday but it won’t be televised until Monday night on ESPN. It’s probably the least important event of the week.
Monday will start with press conferences, where each manager — Joe Maddon of the Chicago Cubs heads the National League, and Terry Francona of the Cleveland Indians leads the American League — will reveal his starting lineup and starting pitcher for Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
On Monday night, Giancarlo Stanton of the host Miami Marlins will defend his Home Run Derby title (8 p.m., ESPN) in his home park, and will be challenged by an eight-player field that includes New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge and Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman and outfielder Cody Bellinger, both rookies. The Tigers don’t have any players vying for the Home Run Derby Champion title this year.
Before the main event on Tuesday, every All-Star will literally be paraded through Miami, arriving at Marlins Park for a red carpet event (3 p.m. ET, MLB Network). Keep an eye out for Fulmer and Upton.
The MLB All-Star Game itself will conclude the festivities in Miami. Fox will televise the pre-game show beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET, and the game is set to start around 8 p.m. Joe Buck will call his 19th Midsummer Classic, an MLB record, joined in the booth by analyst John Smoltz and on the broadcast by reporters Ken Rosenthal and Tom Verducci.
