Matt Manning struggles as Whitecaps go down in defeat

Scores, news and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Monday, August 14, 2017.

Binghamton Rumble Ponies 10, Erie SeaWolves 6 (box)

A.J. Ladwig, and then Victor Alcantara, took their lumps over the first six innings, surrendering eight runs. Ladwig gave up three in the first inning alone, and the SeaWolves never quite caught up. Which is peculiar, because they launched five home runs in this one. Half of their hits were bombs, and yet only once was someone on base. Dawel Lugo, Mike Gerber, Grayson Greiner, Christin Stewart—number 25—and A.J. Simcox all cracked a long ball on Monday night in the losing effort.

Greiner: 2-4, R, RBI, HR, SO

Stewart: 1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR

Ladwig (L): 3.0 IP, 6 ER, 11 H, BB, 3 SO

Coming Up Next: Matt Crouse (6-5, 4.55 ERA) gets the call on Bark at the Park night at UPMC Park.

Fort Myers Miracle 6, Lakeland Flying Tigers 5 (box)

Austin Sodders punched out nine hitters, but surrendered four runs along the way. Still the Flying Tigers relief corps was up to the task, as was the offense, until Eduardo Jimenez blew the save, allowing two runs on a walk and three hits. Will Allen had a pair of doubles with two RBI, and Jose Azocar doubled and scored two runs.

Allen: 3-4, R, 2 RBI, 2 2B, SO

Azocar: 2-5, 2 R, RBI, 2B, 2 SO

Sodders: 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, BB, 9 SO

Coming Up Next: Kyle Dowdy (8-9, 2.89 ERA) starts for the Flying Tigers on Tuesday.

Dayton Dragons 7, West Michigan Whitecaps 4 (box)

It was another failure to launch for Matt Manning on Monday. The Tigers’ top prospect only got two outs in his second start for the Whitecaps. He surrendered four earned runs on one hit, courtesy of a hit batter and a pair of walks right out of the gate. Locke St. John didn’t do so much better, giving up another three runs. Chad Sedio kept his hot hand, spanking a pair of doubles. Danny Pinero doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Sedio: 2-4, 2 2B, SO

Pinero: 1-3, R, 2 RBI, 2B, BB

Manning: 0.2 IP, 4 ER, H, 2 BB, HBP, SO

Coming Up Next: Spencer Watkins (7-2, 2.77 ERA) takes on the Dragons on Tuesday night.

Batavia Muckdogs 3, Connecticut Tigers 2 (box)

Ryan Castellanos gave the Tigers six solid innings of work, but the offense couldn’t quite match the Muckdogs. Cameron Warner and Reynaldo Rivera each had two hits, and Rivera launched a solo shot, his second, in the ninth inning.

Rivera: 2-4, R, RBI, HR

Warner: 2-4, RBI, SO

Coming Up Next: The Tigers will break for the All-Star game on Tuesday.

The Hens send Anthony Vasquez (7-7, 4.03 ERA) to the mound after an off day.
