The Detroit Tigers finally did it. Justin Verlander was traded to the Houston Astros about a minute before midnight on Thursday night. The tear down is in full swing. Twitter was on fire for a solid hour leading up to the end of baseball’s waiver period, with reports, corrections and confusion flying until it seemed that nothing had happened. And then, just a few minutes past midnight, definitive word finally arrived. Justin Verlander is gone.
In return, the Tigers received a fine prospect package. They acquired starting pitcher Franklin Perez, center fielder Daz Cameron, and catcher Jake Rogers. Perez was ranked third in a stacked Astros’ farm system and is probably the Tigers number one prospect when everything shakes out. Daz Cameron was ranked ninth, and Rodgers eleventh.
The addition of Perez gives the Tigers five of the top 100 prospects in baseball according to MLB Pipeline.
