Justin Verlander was traded to the Houston Astros late Thursday — like, the very last minute just before midnight late — completing a saga that feels like it’s gone on forever. Shock and sadness are likely the top emotions in people’s minds right now, but there might be a certain amount of “well, at least that’s over” poking its head out. We all knew it was coming eventually, and we just had to keep hearing about it over and over and over.
(Yes, yes, we know Bless You Boys kept posting about it, too, but that’s just part of the gig.)
The Justin Verlander trade timeline:
2:40 p.m. Thursday — Justin Upton’s been traded, is JV next?
4:40 p.m. Thursday — But it’s complicated
a verlander trade is said "complicated." there's luxury tax threshold considerations for a few big teams. also, he has full no-trade.— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) August 31, 2017
11:15 p.m. Thursday — A trade is close!
Tigers and Astros very close to finalizing a deal for Justin Verlander. Verlander's approval is believed to be final hurdle— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) September 1, 2017
11:25 p.m. Thursday — It’s off!
I have been told that Verlander deal is off. Apparently he didn't waive no trade clause. Again, Verlander deal has been nixed— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) September 1, 2017
The Verlander deal was nixed either because he vetoed it, or because the Astros got cold feet and pulled back part of their offer. Not clear— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) September 1, 2017
11:47 p.m. Thursday — But they’re still talking
12:03 a.m. Friday — Is it safe to come out now?
I'm calling it. No deal. Goodnight.— Peter K (@FrogTownTigers) September 1, 2017
12:16 a.m. Friday — Shit. Goodbye, JV.
The Tigers have traded Justin Verlander to the Astros, I'm told.— anthony fenech (@anthonyfenech) September 1, 2017
