Our most important discovery of the offseason hasn’t been a heretofore unknown international free agent, or an exciting prospect for the 2018 draft. No, the most exhilarating thing to be revealed over this cold, dark, barren winter is that Daniel Norris has an Instagram account for his van.
The vehicle, lovingly named Shaggy, uses its social media presence to share good times with its beloved bearded owner, and the offseason adventures they have together.
This is not the first time Shaggy has made a splash. During Norris’s tenure with the Toronto Blue Jays, the media went wild upon discovering that Norris lived in the van during spring training rather than renting out more expensive digs like his teammates.
On the Instagram account we get lovingly documented photos of the old 1978 Volkswagen Westfalia van.
Shaggy is also an integral part of keeping Norris in shape over the winter months, something of a gym buddy.
Many of the photos are taken by Norris, while others are shot by Norris’s friend and travel companion Ben Moon, which gives us an opportunity to see Shaggy and Norris in their element together.
The account is genuinely sweet and delightful, giving fans a little more insight into the wayfarer life Norris lives when not playing ball.
It’s part of his mythos, the woodsy charm that he exudes. You can picture Norris pulling out of Comerica in Shaggy on the last day of the regular season and asking, “Where to, bud?” then setting off for California to surf, or Utah to camp under the wide open sky. Wherever they go, adventure awaits.
