The Detroit Tigers finalized their Opening Day roster on Wednesday evening with a trio of roster moves. Right-handed pitchers Johnny Barbato and Mike Fiers were placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to March 26. Barbato is currently dealing with a forearm strain, while Fiers is recovering from a lumbar (low back) strain. The Tigers also added utility player Niko Goodrum to the 40-man roster.
Those three moves brought the Tigers’ active roster to 25 players just in time for Thursday’s Opening Day matchup with the Pittsburgh Pirates. They will carry 12 pitchers to start the season, including starters Jordan Zimmermann, Michael Fulmer, Francisco Liriano, Matthew Boyd, and Daniel Norris.
Goodrum made the team as a non-roster invite to spring training. He hit .289/.327/.664 with four home runs in 45 at-bats. The Tigers made room for him on the 40-man roster by placing lefthander Blaine Hardy on outright waivers over the weekend. Hardy cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Toledo.
