Gameday Thread: Detroit Tigers vs. Pittsburgh Pirates, 1:10 p.m.

After a 24 hour preamble, today is Opening Day!

MLB: Oakland Athletics at Detroit Tigers Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Welcome to the 2018 season! The Detroit Tigers will kick things off with a home series against their designated National League rival, the Pittsburgh Pirates. The weather forecast looks better than Thursday, but Jordan Zimmermann will finally take the mound against the Bucs.

On the other side, Ivan Nova and the Pirates will be looking to start their own season off with a win. The Pirates finished the 2017 season at a disappointing 75-87 and dealt away Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole over the winter. We don’t expect to see the Pirates in the playoff hunt this season, but they aren’t rebuilding at the same magnitude as the Tigers, either.

The Tigers open a season without playoff expectations for the first time in nearly a decade. The rebuild is on, and with most of the franchise’s most valuable veterans already auctioned off, the season will be all about the development of the next generation. The Tigers are projected to win around 70 games this year, and they’re looking to get the first today.

Game 2 is set for 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, but the forecast is looking pretty sketchy for that one, as well. If everything goes according to plan, Michael Fulmer will toe the rubber against Trevor Williams.
