Tigers prospect Isaac Paredes shines in Lakeland loss

Scores, news, and notes from around the Detroit Tigers’ farm system for Saturday, April 14, 2018.

Toledo Mud Hens 4, Pawtucket Red Sox 0 (box)

Some shoddy defending from the Sox gave the Mud Hens an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, and Pawtucket’s offense couldn’t keep pace. Mud Hens starter A.J. Ladwig held the Red Sox to just one hit and two walks in 6 23 innings to improve to 2-0 on the season. Strong work from Johnny Barbato and Mark Montgomery out of the bullpen preserved the shutout. The Hens only had six hits on the game; Jim Adduci and Pete Kozma had the only extra-base hits, both doubles. Mike Gerber had a game to forget with four strikeouts.

Lugo: 1-4, R, SO
Mahtook: 1-4, RBI, 2 SO
Greiner: 1-3, RBI, BB, SO
Ladwig (W): 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO

Coming up next: Warwick Saupold (0-0, 7.71 ERA) will start for the Hens on Sunday as they aim to take three of four from Pawtucket. First pitch is at 2:05 p.m. ET.

Altoona Curve 5, Erie SeaWolves 4 (F/12) (box)

The Curve and SeaWolves scored two runs apiece in the first nine innings of Saturday’s game, then added five more runs in extras when the worst rule in sports took effect. So instead of discussing those shenanigans, we will point out that Kyle Funkhouser had trouble finding the strike zone in his 4 13 innings. He walked five, but also struck out seven while allowing one run on two hits. We will also point out that Erie had eight hits, but all were singles. Arvicent Perez went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Castro: 2-4, SO
Perez: 2-4, 2 RBI
Wilson: 2-5, R, RBI, SB
Funkhouser: 4.1 IP, 2 H, ER, 5 BB, 7 SO

Coming up next: Tyler Alexander (0-0, 3.18 ERA) will start for Erie on Sunday as they look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Curve. Pirates top prospect Mitch Keller (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will start for Altoona.

Charlotte Stone Crabs 7, Lakeland Flying Tigers 4 (box)

Tom de Blok struggled again for Lakeland, allowing six runs on eight hits in 4 13 innings. He struck out five and walked one, but also allowed a pair of home runs. Will Vest had a nice outing in relief, with four strikeouts in 2 13 scoreless innings. Offensively, the Flygers had nine hits, including an RBI double from Isaac Paredes and a triple from Anthony Pereira.

Paredes: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI
Burdeaux: 2-4, SO
Pereira: 1-4, 3B, R, RBI
de Blok (L): 4.1 IP, 8 H, 6 ER, BB, 5 SO

Coming up next: The Flying Tigers will send Alfred Gutierrez (0-0, 3.86 ERA) to the mound on Sunday against Charlotte’s J.D. Busfield (0-1, 2.08 ERA).

West Michigan Whitecaps: postponed

The Whitecaps and Lansing Lugnuts were postponed on Saturday due to inclement weather. They will attempt to play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1:05 p.m. ET. The Whitecaps lost their series opener against Lansing on Friday, snapping a five-game winning streak. Garett King (0-0, 4.15 ERA) will start Game 1 for West Michigan and Elvin Rodriguez (0-0, 4.15 ERA) will get the ball for Game 2.
