Trenton Thunder 4, Erie SeaWolves 2 (box)
Sandy Baez was up against a tough customer in Yankees’ prospect Justus Sheffield on Thursday. Baez was alright, ringing up five strikeouts in five innings of work, but he allowed three earned runs, and Sheffield was too much for the SeaWolves’ offense. Kenny Wilson tripled, walked twice and drove in a run, while Josh Lester and Sergio Alcantara had two hit games with the latter accounting for both his team’s runs. Gerson Moreno returned to action with a scoreless inning of work in the ninth.
Wilson: 1-3, RBI, 3B, 2 BB
Alcantara: 2-4, 2 R, 2B
Baez (L): 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 SO
Coming up next: Spencer Turnbull will battle Nabil Crismatt and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Friday night.
Jupiter Hammerheads 6, Lakeland Flying Tigers 5 (F/10)(box)
The Hammerheads jumped all over Austin Sodders in this one. It was your classic “death by papercuts” kind of inning. A steady stream of soft singles, a few misplays, and Sodders quickly found himself down four runs. To his credit he quieted things down and dominated for the next five innings. Meanwhile the offense made a push.
Isaac Paredes ripped a two-run shot, his third home run of the young season, in the fourth inning. The Flying Tigers then scored single runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings to take a one-run lead. Unfortunately, the bullpen and defense couldn’t hold up, and the Hammerheads were able to tie it up and then win it under the new extra innings rules in the tenth.
Paredes: 1-3, R, 2 RBI, HR, 2 BB, 2 SO
Sedio: 3-5, 2 R, RBI
Sodders: 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, BB, 5 SO
Coming up next: Anthony Castro will look to continue his strong start as he duels Ian Anderson of the Florida Fire Frogs on Friday evening.
West Michigan Whitecaps 7, Bowling Green Hot Rods 3 (box)
The Whitecaps offense got a lot of timely hitting on Thursday night. They rapped out nine hits and drew six walks, putting up seven runs with only two extra base hits. Starter Elvin Rodriguez was solid, going 5 2⁄3 innings with three earned runs. Oswaldo Castillo and Wladimir Pinto combined to finish it out with a combined five punchouts.
Peterson: 3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 H, 3B
Morgan: 2-4, R, RBI, 2B, SO
Rodriguez (W): 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 5 SO
Coming up next: Matt Manning will make his season debut for the West Michigan Whitecaps as they travel to Midland to take on the Great Lakes Loons at 6:05pm ET.
Toledo Mud Hens: off day
The Hens were off on Thursday and will get back at it Friday night. They will send Artie Lewicki to the mound to take on Daniel Camerena and the Scranton Wilkes/Barre RailRiders as a weekend road series gets underway.
